In 2005, Cornell University in Ithaca, New York, undertook a major technological upgrade and renovation of its important dairy processing teaching and research center, the Milk Factory. Project Background and Key Challenges
The Cornell University dairy plant renovation project faced the dual challenges of food processing and academic research:

Strict hygiene and safety standards: All structural materials in contact with or adjacent to the production environment must have a smooth, non-porous surface, be easy to clean and disinfect, and be resistant to corrosion from moisture, cleaning agents, and milk residues to prevent microbial growth and ensure absolute food safety.

Dynamic load and structural stability: Process equipment (such as pasteurizers, fermenters, and bottling lines) generate vibrations during operation. The supporting platform must have sufficient strength, rigidity, and fatigue resistance to ensure long-term stability and safe operation.

Efficient construction and minimal disruption: The factory renovation had to be completed during holidays or within specified timeframes, meeting a tight deadline. The materials needed to be easily and precisely manufactured and quickly installed to minimize impact on teaching, research, and daily production activities.

Cost-Efficiency and Sustainability: The university’s investment project required effective budget control while meeting all functional and safety requirements, while also considering the durability and long service life of the materials to reduce maintenance costs throughout the entire lifespan.

Solution: A283/Q195 Carbon Steel Sheet as the Load-Bearing Framework
After a thorough evaluation, the project engineers ultimately selected A283/Q195 carbon steel sheet as the primary material for the equipment platform and supporting structure. These 20 tons of steel sheets were used to manufacture the panels and beams of the heavy-duty work platform, the steps and framework of the emergency stairway, and supports for large tanks and pipelines. This solution is based on an excellent balance of materials across several parameters:

Balanced strength and cost-effectiveness: A283/Q195 carbon steel sheets exhibit excellent yield and tensile strength, fully supporting the weight of process equipment, materials, and operators, as well as dynamic loads encountered during operation. They provide reliable structural performance while delivering significant cost advantages and ideally meeting project budget control requirements.

Excellent weldability and machinability: This is the key to fast, high-quality construction. This steel grade has a low carbon equivalent and excellent weldability, producing dense, strong, and smooth welds. This allows most structural components to be precision-fabricated in a factory, ensuring dimensional accuracy, and then efficiently assembled directly on-site, significantly reducing construction time and disruptions. Welded components are also easily surface-treated to meet hygienic requirements.

Excellent Surface Finish Adaptability: To meet food industry hygiene standards, these carbon steel sheet elements are sandblasted or ground after welding and finishing to achieve a smooth surface, then coated with a special industrial epoxy or polyurethane coating that meets FDA standards. This durable coating provides an effective physical barrier for the steel sheets, protecting them from moisture, chemical corrosion, and physical abrasion, ensuring long-lasting cleanliness and durability.
