Key role in large-scale roofing projects in automobile factories
At the beginning of the 21st century, China’s automotive industry entered a period of rapid development. Foshan, a major manufacturing hub in Guangdong Province, was actively implementing and building modern automotive production facilities. In 2003, the foundation stone for a landmark new automobile plant was laid in Foshan. This plant required not only advanced manufacturing processes but also a building that met high standards, such as large spans, corrosion resistance, lightweight construction, and long-term cost effectiveness. Therefore, the main plant’s roof was innovatively designed with 5,000 square meters of 1,050 panels of pure industrial aluminum, laying a solid foundation for the project’s success.
Project Background and Key Requirements: This new automobile plant was planned to include fully modern workshops for stamping, welding, painting, and final assembly. Specifically, the final assembly shop and parts warehouse required spacious, column-free spaces to accommodate long production lines and logistics systems, which created challenges for the span and roof structure. Foshan is located in a subtropical monsoon climate characterized by high temperatures, heavy rainfall, and high humidity year-round, and the air can potentially contain traces of corrosive components from the industrial zone. Therefore, the design team formulated several key requirements for roofing materials:
Lightweight and High Strength: While ensuring structural reliability, it is essential to minimize the roof’s dead weight to reduce stress on the steel structure and construction costs.
Excellent Weathering and Corrosion Resistance: The material must effectively resist rain, moisture, and atmospheric corrosion to ensure the roof remains intact for decades, reducing maintenance costs.
Good Performance and Installation: The material must be easy to cut, bend, and fasten on-site, accommodating complex roof designs and ensuring smooth construction.
Economical and Aesthetic: While meeting functional requirements, it is essential to control overall costs and maintain the simple, modern appearance of the industrial building.
Solution: 1050 aluminum panels selected as the roofing system. After several stages of technical evaluation, 1050 aluminum panels were selected as the primary roofing material for the plant’s main building. This decision fully took into account the ideal match between the properties of 1050 aluminum sheets and the project requirements:
Excellent corrosion resistance: Being pure industrial aluminum, 1050 aluminum sheets quickly form a dense protective aluminum oxide film on their surface. This passivation film effectively seals out moisture and corrosive environments, ensuring superior durability compared to conventional steel sheets in the humid industrial environment of Foshan, fundamentally eliminating the risk of corrosion and roof punctures.
A significant advantage in terms of lightness: aluminum has a significantly lower density than steel. Using 1050 aluminum sheets as a roofing material significantly reduces the permanent load on the plant’s roof structure. This allows designers to optimize the cross-sectional dimensions of the load-bearing steel beams, directly reducing the overall steel consumption and civil construction costs of the project, achieving significant economic benefits.
Excellent manufacturability and construction efficiency: 5,000 square meters of grade 1050 aluminum sheets were processed into standard roofing panels. Their high ductility and flexibility allow for easy installation, joining, and finishing on-site. This not only accelerated roofing system installation and ensured the project’s schedule was met, but also guaranteed the overall tightness and watertightness of the roof.
Long service life and ease of maintenance: The roofing system made from grade 1050 aluminum panels is designed to last over 30 years and requires virtually no special maintenance, reliably guaranteeing the continuous operation of the automobile plant. At the same time, the natural silvery-white metallic sheen of the aluminum panels’ surface gives the building a modern, clean, industrial look.
Project achievements and long-term impact: During construction in 2003, 5,000 square meters of 1050 aluminum roofing panels were successfully installed on the roof of the main building of the Foshan Automobile Plant, providing a strong yet lightweight “protective umbrella” for this modern industrial facility.
The successful completion of construction and commissioning of the plant quickly made it an important base for the automotive industry in Foshan and throughout southern China. The successful use of 1050 aluminum roofing panels set a new model for material selection for China’s rapidly developing industrial enterprises at the time, demonstrating the value of aluminum in construction.
