The key role of Saudi Arabia's large-scale water pipeline project

In 2012, to meet the urgent water needs of a growing population and economic development, Saudi Arabia launched a strategic national water pipeline project. The project’s goal was to construct a main water pipeline through harsh desert terrain, delivering purified freshwater or deep groundwater to vital residential and industrial areas. In constructing such infrastructure, critical to the national economy and the livelihoods of the population, reliability, cost-effectiveness, and usability of materials were key factors in the project’s success. 900 tons of A283/Q195 carbon steel plates were purchased for the project’s main supports and major fittings, providing a robust structural guarantee for the completion of this “lifeline.”

Project Background and Key Challenges: Saudi Arabia is located on the Arabian Peninsula, characterized by vast deserts and extreme climatic conditions, including scorching daytime temperatures, significant diurnal temperature fluctuations, and potentially corrosive soil. The water pipeline project faces a number of significant challenges:

Exceptional Environmental Adaptability: Materials must withstand high-temperature oxidation from prolonged exposure to sunlight, as well as potential corrosion caused by sandstorms and low-salinity alkaline environments, while meeting the unique mechanical requirements of construction in desert regions.

High Structural Loads: Large-diameter water pipelines and their internal hydrostatic and hydrodynamic pressures place extremely high demands on the structural strength and stability of components such as support saddles, pipe racks, valve manhole structures, and connecting flanges.

Tight schedule and cost control: As a key national project, its scale requires a stable supply of materials, easy processing, and effective overall cost control to ensure on-time delivery.

Excellent welding and machining properties: To ensure complete sealing and structural integrity of the pipeline system, extensive on-site welding and assembly operations require materials with excellent weldability and easy machining.

Solution: A283/Q195 carbon steel plate becomes the primary structural material.

After a comprehensive evaluation, project managers and contractors ultimately selected A283/Q195 carbon steel plate as the preferred material for the key structural components of the pipeline system. These 900 tons of steel plate were primarily used to manufacture pipe clamp supports, reinforcement rings, wall panels and frames for repair valve manholes, and various connecting flanges. This choice was driven by the material’s numerous advantages:

Balanced strength and cost-effectiveness: A283/Q195 carbon steel plate is a low-carbon steel with moderate yield and tensile strength, capable of withstanding the enormous static and dynamic loads generated by the water supply piping system. While meeting all structural safety requirements, it offers significant cost advantages, achieving an optimal balance between safety and economics for a project requiring 900 tons of material.

Excellent weldability and machinability were crucial to the successful completion of the project. The steel’s low carbon equivalent and excellent weldability enable fast and efficient welding, creating high-strength and reliable welds. This is critical to ensuring reliable connections between supporting elements and piping, as well as between various structural components. Furthermore, its high ductility and toughness allow for easy cutting, bending, and forming, making it ideal for large-scale prefabrication, significantly increasing construction efficiency and ensuring project deadlines.

Reliability and Durability: Despite the harsh conditions of Saudi Arabia, thoughtful design (e.g., appropriate thickness allowances) and the necessary protective coatings (e.g., anti-corrosion paint or galvanizing) in critical areas enable A283/Q195 carbon steel sheets to provide reliable support for water supply systems for decades, ensuring long-term and reliable operation.

Wide Market Availability and Consistent Quality: Compliance with the internationally recognized ASTM A283 standard or the generally accepted GB/T Q195 standard ensures consistent quality and sufficient supply of these 900 tons of steel sheets, providing a reliable guarantee for the smooth execution of the project.
